What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a term used for disorders that cause nervousness, fear, hesitation, and worrying. An anxiety disorder is a mental illness where a person feels anxious constantly.

No one knows what causes anxiety, but we do know it’s our body’s natural response to danger. Having anxiety before a stressful event, job interview, or difficult situation is normal. However, having anxiety every day that disrupts the way you live life and go about normal daily activities falls into an anxiety disorder. Often times, anxiety is linked to something in your past.  If you suspect that your anxiety started due to a specific past event, it may be easier to treat than you think.


Symptoms

The following are signs and symptoms of an anxiety disorder. However, no one experiences anxiety in the same way. Anxiety symptoms can be physical as well as emotional.

  • Constant worrying
  • Fatigue
  • Feeling tense or jumpy
  • Feelings of dread or anticipating the worst
  • Insomnia/restlessness
  • Muscle tension
  • Pounding heart
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Upset stomach


What are Anxiety Attacks?

Anxiety attacks or panic attacks, are periods of intense panic or fear. They can occur with or without a warning and rarely last longer than 10-30 minutes. I can help you learn to control your anxiety so you will have less panic attacks. Or, even better, eliminate your anxiety and panic attacks all together.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Feeling anxious all the time. Constant worries and fears that disrupt everyday life
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Thoughts or behaviors that seem impossible to control
  • Panic Disorder: Repeated, unexplainable anxiety attacks
  • Phobia: Fear of a precise object, activity, or situation that presents no danger
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Occurs after a traumatic event or situation
  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Fear of being judged by others or humiliated in public


Counseling and Treatment for Anxiety

I use, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and Mindfulness Therapy to help you manage and treat your anxiety, or better yet, eliminate it. I focus on what triggers you to feel anxious.  Sometimes it is a cognitive process, sometimes it is a past memory.  Whatever the trigger, I can help you overcome it.
